What to do with HDV?

It's been a few years since the HDV format has been available yet there are many of us who are still only editing DV. People ask us all the time "What would I do with HDV if I edited with it anyways? How would I get it to my clients?" These used to be valid questions because it was hard to supply your customers with an “HDV” finished product. Also with the cost difference between HDV and DV, many stay editing with DV. Which is great if that is all you need. Matrox still makes the RT.X100 for those only editing DV.

However in the last year multiple NLEs now edit HDV and edit it well. You can use either the Matrox RT.X2 & Adobe, or Grass Valley/Canopus Edius. Some use the Avid products Xpress Pro or Liquid to edit HDV. With this said we all know that editing HDV has not been the problem. The problem is how do we give this to the customer?

There is a solution!

Blu-Ray is a reliable, realistic solution. Many companies have desk top players out, also with the new Sony Playstation 3 that numbers of homes that can play Blu-Ray is climbing everyday. Pioneer has a burner that can be purchased for $699. Roxio just released a great authoring software for Blu-Ray authoring - DVDit Pro HD. You can get the software with the burner and 5 disks for a great price of $999.

So if you are debating about going HDV debate no more. Blu-Ray is here and this allows your customers to have finished HDV edits.
